Track and field athletics is a collection of sports events that involve running, throwing, jumping and walking. Organized athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 776 BC, and most modern events are conducted by the member federations of the International Association of Athletics Federations. The athletics meeting forms the backbone of the modern Summer Olympics, and other leading international meetings include the IAAF World Championships and World Indoor Championships.

Why do athletes running 100m and 200m reduce speed before crossing the finish line?
Q. I have been following the track and field athletics championship broadcasts from Osaka. Every time I watch 100m or 200m, it seems that athletes slow down before the finish line. Why is that?

A. If you are referring to the runners in the front, it can't be. It is the last few seconds that is most important. If they slows down the next one in the pack will overtake. May be who are in the behind slows down when the runners in the front crosses the line. What I have seen was that they lung forward at the line to get the extra few millimeters. What you have seen could be an illusion.

Why does Y! Answers not have its own category for athletics?
Q. Athletics covers all sorts of track and field events, and is a worldwide sport - it's what the Olympics are best known for, so why isn't there a category on here for it? I meant that why isn't there a subcategory within sport for athletics, and to put all athletics questions within 'Olympics' wouldn't be right because there are many other athletics events besides the Olympics.

Long distance and short distance training?
Q. I understand long distance and short distance running are different. But, usually, for school athletics (track and field) I would specialise in short distance sprinting 100m and 200m and I have never considered myself a good long distance runner. But as of late (past month or two) I have been training longer distances (longer than my 100m and 200m anyway) such as 1-5km and I have noticed I cannot sprint as fast as before. I know it is because I have been training my muscles to get used to the oxygen intake whilst running longer distances and my fast twitch muscles may have weakened. I want to improve on my short distance times and be faster but I also want to increase my overall fitness and stamina so I run longer distances but I also… [cont.]
