Q. Because of the relative small numbers of white runners in athletics especially in the past 30 years and absolute dominance of runners of African descent , I have asked this question. It will be too hard to ask who is the greatest black runner of all time because there are too many of them. I have compiled a list of the most successful white male runners of all time to make it easier for people. When you select the person, you have to give a very compelling reason why you selected that person, which includes number of world records, Olympic titles, influence legacy, and number of track meets won (if possible). Jim Ryun. He set the records, as you say, in the junior 800 and 1500. He also set the world record mile. He ran a 3:55 mile in high school! I think that's more impressive than Webb's 3:53(high school) mile. Why? Because when Ryun ran his time it was with much older training methods, shoes and running tracks, but mostly because he not only beat the world record holder of the time, he was two seconds off the world record! That would be like a high schooler running 3:45 right now -- under the American record. It's unfortunate about the lack of American talent on the elite distance running level. We're still too interested in thems other sports where you hit/throw/kick a ball around a field.
