A world record normally refers to the best sporting performance ever recorded. Guinness World Records collate and publish notable records of all types, from first and best to worst human achievements, to extremes in the natural world. TerminologyIn the United States the form world's record was formerly more common. The term world best was also briefly in use. The latter term is still used in athletics (track and field) to describe performances not recognized as an official world record: either because the event is a non-qualifying event (e.g. the 500 yards run or individual events in a decathlon), or because it does not fulfill other criteria of an otherwise qualifying event (e.g. the Great North Run half-marathon, which has an excessive downhill gradient). In cultureMalaysia is one country where world record-breaking has become something of a national fad. In India the setting and of breaking records is popular: the country has a local version of the Guinness Book of Records, called the Limca Book of Records, after a local soft drink brand. Q. I've checked on Google, and so far I can't find anything good. I know the Towers of Hanoi puzzle doesn't have a spotlight in the Guinness Book of World Records, so it's very hard to find reliable information. Could somebody help me? Thanks a lot! Asked by happymeepit - Tue Dec 30 20:53:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The Towers of Hanoi puzzle requires exactly 2^n - 1 moves to solve (where n is the number of disks). The solution is well defined. Apart from timing how adept you are at moving the disks, there really isn't anything unique about solving it. I'm sure the problem with having a record is deciding how to standardize the puzzle. For example, if you have spindles, time is taken lining up the holes. If you just stack disks, how accurate do you have to be in lining them up? I could get really fast if I just had to barely touch a disk to the pile.
